100 years of The Shambles, York, England

Artist's Description

Two pictures taken about 100 years apart of The Shambles in York. This is Yorks best known street, and has buildings dating back to the 14th century! This was originally a street for the butchers, and the name Shambles in Anglo-Saxon means the shelf that butchers displayed their meat on.
Perhaps there is no reason to expect changes in this street over 100 years, but note the (re)appearance of the timber frame on the house on the right.
