The best known street in York, shown at night with a near full moon (shot from the next road as it did not appear here!). Some of the buildings date from the 14th century, and the name derives from a shortening of the Anglo-Saxon “fleshammels” – shelves where flesh is kept. From this you may guess that this was originally a street full of butchers, and in some cases the shelves and meathooks can still be seen.
