100 Strangers Project - Vikings in York

I have just finished my first “100 strangers” project. However, by living in York I have decided to take a local flavour and aimed at the Viking festival which was held during half term in February. I only had from Monday to Friday lunchtime due to commitments in Wales, but by Friday at 12:00 I had shot 75 portraits of (mostly) strangers. These are now all on display "here"http://www.redbubble.com/people/grahamcsmith/co...
I had only one refusal throughout the week, but could not hit my target as the main influx was happening on the Friday for the main events on Saturday and Sunday (which I had to miss). Nonetheless, having taken and processed 75 portraits I feel that this was a great first step as this is not normally my area.

Rowntree Park Photo Competition publicity

Today, Wednesday 15th May, The Press in York published a nice article promoting the Friends of Rowntree Park Photography competition. Four previous top photographs are in the article.
To tie in with the timing, I have also put up four posters on the nearby notice boards and given posters and leaflets to six local schools. Local camera clubs have also been infromed, so I’m hoping for a good number of entries in all categories (under 16, amateur, enthusiast).

Exhibition in York.

I have just had the dates confirmed for the exhibition to run at York’s Theate Royal. These are from the 3rd September to 1st October this year (2012). I am part of York Priory Street Creative Photography group that will have about 20 exhibits. Now we just need to persuade a few more people from the group to join in. This will be my second exhibition and will hopefully have loads more people viewing, given it is by the main foyer.

Tips for travel photography

I get to travel to some unusual place through work (and pleasure) and have built up a routine to help me get the most from my limited time in any one place. Since this often means going to places that are not well known, how do you scope a site before you travel? I thought I’d share my format with you. If you find this useful, please leave a comment.…

1. Open Google Maps and find the place you are going to. At the top right you should be able to hover over the Map or Satellite icon and choose “Photos”. Work out the area that you can travel to in the time you will have. Then spend some time zooming in and examining the photos. Find a few locations that you like. This does not have to be photos that you like and want to copy, in many cases I don’t like the picture aesthetically, but think th

York Rowntree Park Photo Competition Publicity

I’m told that The Press in York will feature the Rowntree Park photography competition on Wednesday 9th May. I’m hoping that this will stimulate some interest in the competition, although to be fair, I will not know until prints start arriving through my door.

Photography Course

So today, in mixed weather (sun, run and hail) I ran my first photography course with Terrence Michael. It was a free family workshop for Friends of Rowntree Park. We covered all the basics primarily for people who have more buttons and dials on their camera than they know what to do with them. I hope that some of them will work on building their skills and take part in the Rowntree Park Photography Cometition, which is now open! I’m looking forward to advertising it and receiving some entries.

Judging Photographic Competition

Well I’ve decided to take on the task, with Terrence Michael, of running and judging York’s Rowntree Park Photo Competition. Decided on the categories of entry (under 16, amateur and enthusiast/professional), the final date for submisison (June 30th) and the topic “Beauty in the Park”. Posters edited from earlier years and I’m trying to get York’s Mayor to pick the final images in each category.
The competition has been run nearly annually by https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Frien...
and there will be a full advert and event links soon.
First, I’ve agreed to help run a photography event – a free family photography workshop at the Park to get interest:

I’ll keep you updated with progress.
