This work seeks to explore, tongue-in-cheek, the dichotomy that exists in sport. On one hand, sport celebrates the pursuit of physical excellence and achievement. On the other, we do it just for fun.

The Pantheon of Sport sits on a grassy hilltop, bathed in soft, dappled sunlight. In the grounds stands a bronze statue of Discobolos. A dog, representing “everyman”, leaps toward his prize. A seagull, the spectator, perches purposefully on the statue’s head and observes with interest. Is the dog’s goal achievable? Probably not. But is that really the point? It is, after all, only a game.

A Sporting Chance is dedicated to my father who, realising that I would never stand on a winner’s dais, discouraged me by showing abject disinterest in my childhood athletic endeavours.

    Magnificent creation Graeme!!!

  • Than you Greta! This one took a long time – literally years! The concept was there, and 4 other versions exist, but I was never completely satisfied with any of them. For me, this version has the right balance of reality and surreality – something I try to achieve in all my work. Glad I can now finally put it to bed!

Marvelous! You achieved your objective – the Surreal with the Real – and in such a stunning and creative way! Most thought provoking, too. I think my father felt that way about my talents on the violin…. much too tone deaf, didn’t do that well… better I’m sure, that one is encouraged to pursue their passion early on, not the passions of our folks. Brilliant work!

  • I agree entirely, Nadya ….. the baggage out parents saddle us with …. ;-) For me, art has always been more than simply making pretty pictures – there has to be some depth to it. Thanks for your comments, they are much appreciated.
