Gracey

Based on Martin Kirkwood's "Stark Raving Bonkers" Journal by Gracey

Posted on March 30, 2009

Earlier this month Martin Kirkwood responded to a suggestion from funkyfacestudio to paint blindfolded, and posted his results in his journal (titled Stark Raving Bonkers )

I was inspired by his willingness to step up to the challenge, and found myself thinking “why not”.

Since I’m a photographer, not a painter, I figured I couldn’t do any worse blindfolded than I could while sighted.

I may have been wrong :)

I did cheat a little…I didn’t want a white background, so I painted that with green and black first. And I did have a little help. I didn’t put my paint on the canvas as Martin did, I put in my tray, and I needed help getting the brush to the tray.

I can tell you, my husband’s eyebrows were pretty much on the top of his when I told him what I was doing…filled in his bald spot rather nicely too, hehehe.

Still…it’s rather ugly (the result), but it was kinda fun (and definitely messy).

The one happy thought is that I can always paint over it :)

Thank you Martin and Funkyface for a nice break in a miserable gray day.

Brilliant idea! I wonder what would happen if I took some photos while blind folded? Hmmm.

  • Gracey:

maybe we should try that next :) There is a blind photographer I really admire.

Wow!!! Far out. You should take up painting professionally. :))

  • Gracey:

Hah! Maybe I’ll come up with a $1.2 masterpiece…after all if dogs, cats and chimps can do it, maybe I can. oh, wait…maybe I’ll get my cat to do the next one :)

LOL!!! I like Helen’s blindfolded photography idea. Now where did I put my Nikon D80?

That will be a challenge If I can find the damn thing. :))

    It’s actually really cool…..

  • Gracey:

Nice framing…my livingroom is black and taupe tho…change the frame to black and I’m game.

Just so you know…my husband asked me what it was supposed to BE, hahaha.

Put it up for critique in the Painters in Modern Times forums.

    I think it’s brilliant. :))

  • Gracey:

Seriously Martin…I’m not sure I can stand a critique of my “painting” skills :) You’ve got some awesome artists in that group. They’d all die laughing if I told them what I used to paint that with.

I quite like it Gracey ! how funny you two……………I guess I should try it again myself.

  • Gracey:

Yes you should, and I’d love to see it.

Oh, hey…maybe that sound like a new group…blindfolded paintings, lol.

That p ainting…it still has a puddle of water in the middle of it…I wonder how long it will take to dry :)

Seriously. Crop it and enhance the contrast and colour saturation a bit then submit it to Painters in Modern Times.

Yes we have some awesome painters in the group but some utter rubbish too. I once submitted a scan of my paint encrusted palette which received great reviews.

  • Gracey:

It’s mostly dry now and looks a little different…it’s growing on me :D

Maybe I’ll try a better shot with the D700 and give it a go. Thanks for your encouragement Martin.

Sounds and looks like something we should all have a go at!! I like it as it is, Gracey… and you can tell Hubby that it’s a Secret Garden or Underwater Garden!! Fancy having to explain what it is…
