TUTORIAL: Buttons, Links and Image Previews

Posted about 3 years ago

I’ve recently been asked to help someone with a tutorial on using image product previews on your profile in a smaller size, and how to make and use buttons in your profile, and to be able to make the image product previews smaller.

To that end, this is a tutorial that explains how to make buttons using online button generators, and how to make them show in your profile, and then how to link…

Editing Images without Buying Software

Posted about 3 years ago

Often enough I find people asking for editing help that can’t afford or don’t want to download editing tools – not even free ones, for their own reasons.

I’ve spent some time checking out the online tools selection (Jo posted a listing of ten of these tools a while back). I didn’t use most of them, but looked them over, grabbed a screenshot and linked them all on a p…

Based on Martin Kirkwood's "Stark Raving Bonkers" Journal

Posted about 3 years ago

Earlier this month Martin Kirkwood responded to a suggestion from funkyfacestudio to paint blindfolded, and posted his results in his journal (titled Stark Raving Bonkers )

I was inspired by his willingness to step up to the challenge, and found myself thinking “why not”.

Since I’m a photographer, not a painter, I figured I couldn’t do any worse blindfolded than I could wh…

Tutorial: Replacing a Sky in PS Elements (7)

Posted over 3 years ago

This quick tutorial for beginners was based on a request from CJ Hummel – she was looking for a way to tanslate the positions and names of the tools from my regular tutorials for use in PS Elements.

Sometime in the next week or so I’ll post a page with the PSE tools and the corresponding names/places of the PSCS tools.

For now, I’ve written a quick tutorial for beginners that wi…

Tutorial Listing

Posted over 3 years ago

This is simply a page where I can the links to all the tutorials I have hosted on my web server. As I add new tutorials, this list will change, but every once in a while I send out an update journal.

Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago I accidently deleted a folder that contained the tutorials (among other things), but up until someone bmailed me looking for one of the tutorials, I hadn’t f…

TUTORIAL: Resizing Images for Print in Photoshop - The Simpler Way

Posted almost 4 years ago

For those of you with Photoshop, here’s a simple tutorial for resizing images for print in Photoshop.

Much to my surprise, I discovered that Photoshop (CS2 is what I use) has a wizard for resizing images to print – something I had not seen before since I never ventured into the “Help” menu, which is where you’ll find it. This option is not available in CS3.

I am curr…

Inspirations from Buck's Mountain

Posted almost 4 years ago

One of the inspirations I draw on for my own work sometimes is a trip we took to Georgia some years back – and the girl (well, woman really) who lives, surrounded by nature, on the top of Buck’s Mountain – Patricia Montgomery.

She’s been at the art of photography for a number of years, and her array of filters for her digital canon amazed me. Even more amazing was some of …

The Astonishing Reality of Martin Kirkwood

Posted almost 4 years ago

Having only recently had the opportunity to really look at Martin’s work instead of glancing through his portfolio I find myself astonished at how much reality appears in his work – and at how versatile he is with different mediums.

I love his abstracts, but also his portraits – it’s difficult to choose a favourite from among this amazing display. This self portrait is one…

The Photographer's Heart, The Scientist's Mind - Dana DiPasquale

Posted almost 4 years ago

One of my choices for this series of interviews is Dana DiPasquale – not because I know her very well, but because I don’t. I’ve found her photography work to be unique and surprising. Her combination of simple vignette’s and unusual composition results in some seriously emotive pieces. In particular, I was taken with her architectural work

Some of my favourite pieces in h…

The "Bear" Facts

Posted almost 4 years ago

One of my favourite artists, both on and off the bubble, is Barry King. His incredible drive and determination to overcome obstacles others would balk at makes him a person of note in my eyes – a wonderful artist, yes, but there’s a lot more to him than just that.

When I first noticed his work, it was mosly drawings, done on a tablet, but resembling very smooth pencil work. I was amaz…
