Yes, these are overpainted images from photographs (painted by mouse in Photoshop – still don’t have a tablet yet) – generally after the painting most of the photograph is removed. With the case of this girl (my daughter) much of the hair remains under the brush strokes to give it definition. If you were to look at the full size image you’d see little in the way of shadow – the tonal changes in skin are created by adding slightly different colours on differen layers and then using the gaussian blur to blend them. No artistic filters are used, just brush strokes and colour (the paint).
