Wistful Desires

Do cats dream? Do they have memories, or desires?

If so, this one is probably remembering summer days in the old backyard; chasing bees and ants and basking in the warm sun on the concrete stoop.

At the age of 14, she’s getting on in years. Now most of her time is spent sleeping, though she has her moments…at some point in almost every day that goes by she chases her catnip ball madly around the house.

Every evening she searches out her her toy mouse…as old as she is, and though dirty and minus a few parts, it must remind her of happy times. She refuses a new one, even one of identical design and colour. This favored toy she carries into bed…our bed…where she curls up contentedly around it at my feet.

The day will come when we no longer have her, but for now, as old as she is…she is still my baby kitty.
