Silent Sunlit Stair.

Glenn-Patrick Ferguson

Silent Sunlit Stair.

This image was taken at an abandonded state hospital for the developmentally disabled.I came across this staircase and as I climbed it I was struck by how worn the stone treads were.Worn down a full inch in places. How many steps would that take? How many feet? How many times? This place was a home to many-probably all some knew as home.I felt honored to be able to photograph it.

beautiful. i’m often aware of the same types of thoughts in europe, where the old human-worn buildings overwhelm you with questions about mortality and the transience of life.

  • Glenn-Patrick ... replied

I would imagine that Europe has a lot of this-as Americans we don’t have nearly the history you do-kind of jealous:)

  • Rex Inkpen

    Rex Inkpen

as an Australian, we’re in a similar boat to you! Europe is a real eye opener for us children of the new-world.. i was in a church in a small english village last month and on the wall there was a list of every deacon since 1210. It was quite spooky meeting the incumbent given the remarkable lineage. The grounds had retaining walls made out of marble that were weathered, unreadable tombstones from a long distant past.

  • Glenn-Patrick ... replied

    1210-wow.
