Burn It Down
When does it all begin, this spiral towards flame?
A missing shingle and a nail worked loose.
Perhaps a window left open during a summer storm, a broken promise or two.
Hard winters,a cold shoulder, perhaps some bills to pay.
Paint gets thin,smiles wear through.
Toys in the dooryard, all used up.
Meals shared,forgotten and some missed.
Some cancerous cell that eats wood-never cut out, somehow missed.
Wind and words hit hard, like a knife at your back.
Then come the vandals.Tempting you with warmth and kindness.
Only to realize they came to do harm-scatter your belongings, break your window panes.Just there for the thrill-to feed on you.
To take what little you have left.
That feeling. The feeling of a house that’s lived in, cared for.Gone.
The glue that holds it together, the thing you can’t see or name or even know.
But you trust it’s there. The people move on, the glue dissolves.
It all adds up.
Then it all comes down-slowly, one painful board at a time.
“Shoot it now” he said.”We’re gonna burn it down”.
Burn it down.
Burn it all down.
