Deep in Thought

Thank you Primate Art for taking such an interest and such a love of my work in Japan on these lovely animals. I was very fortunate to have come across this place and even more fortunate to try and work out how to get them from where I was staying in the area. The expressions are of course, one of main reasons for photographing these animals. There is the ‘cute factor’ but there is also the ‘emotional factor’. Its the task of the photographer to grab the ‘thoughtful expression’ rather than a ‘sad’ one. Sometimes its the comical one.
Deep In Thought was a photographic triumph of years of ‘average amateur photography’. Its the shot of a lifetime of sometimes near misses and out of focus and clipped from frame shots. Its a just reward :o) to be shared with other photographers who can then think – I want a shot like that and I aspire to get it.
Not as a matter of saying I am great, rather that ‘enthusiasm starts the race,
but perserverance ENDS IT. Good luck to all RB, enjoy photography and get the
rewards of your time and effort. Mine with a Nikon D80.

Fabulous shot ! ……. Excellent work ! ……..
gottheshot replied
Thank you JDM :o)
I was one metre away and just focused on his eyes. He was with his mum and his eyes just made me wanna melt. To be that close to one of these creatures is an awesome priviledge, not scaring them in any way was paramount..The detail I got from a 10MP camera is still unbelievable now. One of my own faves :o)
Dennis Gay
G’day GTS!
An incredibly good Nature shot of this most interesting primate.
There is a great sense of intimacy with this fine photograph as we are drawn right in to share the moment with the subject all due to your tight composition, excellent point of view and expert photography.
Most interesting and totally enjoyable viewing.

gottheshot replied
Totally BLOWN AWAY by your words Dennis, thats the most wonderful comment I have ever seen on one of my photos. The words ‘expert’ and ‘photography’ together in one sentence on one of my photos is an awesome compliment. Kind regards, Paul
Anne Smyth
unbelievable eyes, wonderful image
gottheshot replied
Cheers Anne, I took many many pictures of this little guy while he was sitting still with his mum. Thankfully the shutter going off didnt seem to phase either of them in the least. No glass, no fences, no cages, just open air living for them all, a truly wonderful and safe place for them and incredible photo opportunities for me.

Chuffed upon chuffed, what can i say – the monkeys are the stars – truth be told. Cuteness, expressions, allowing me to be that close to them – it was wonderous.

Great shot!
gottheshot replied
Cheers E.R. :o) It was a great couple of months in Japan – an experience of a lifetime :o)
MrBanana
Fantastic capture. I absolutely love macaques for the reasons mentioned in the description especially the Japanese Macaques. These and the Suluwasi Crested Macaques have such a range of emotions and facial expressions that its easy to be enthralled for hours at a time. I care for the latter but its my dream to one day visit Japan to work, study or just see the ‘snow monkeys’. Very well done and Insta-fav’d.
gottheshot replied
The Snow Monkeys I found to be more aggressive and ‘anit-humans’. The macaques dont mind photos or flash but the Snow Monkeys – I guess due to their environment – are standoffish and borderline dangerous to human contact. A real experience to see them in the wild though and walking around me as if in a busy shopping street :o)
Brandie1
Fantastic capture.
gottheshot replied
Cheers for your comment Brandie, I was there 2 days and tried to get the best shots I could :o)
Chamika Amarasiri
Splendid shot! Excellent close up.
gottheshot replied
Hi Chamika, Thank you very much. These are some of the best photographs of my life. All of the monkey photos are the best of over 100 photos taken over 2 days in southern Japan.
Sally P Moore
Congratulations This great image has been featured in the Alphabet Soup. Please remember to enter it in the Best of M Challenge. Best wishes, Sally
gottheshot replied
Cheers Sally,
I just could not believe the clarity of this shot -myself.
Its my best closeup shot of a monkey on my two days in southern Japan where they live. An amazing experience to see these lovely animals of all ages from 3 days old to whatever.
Overwhelmed – Paul

Cheers Sheila, I pretty much saw this photo as my best shot of my time with these monkeys – its a joint first between this one and Three’s A Crowd (with three monkeys trying to get on a swing. I flipped a coin between these two and posted Deep In Thought for ‘M’. So glad I did.

Marie Sharp
TOP TEN CHALLENGE WINNER ~ BEST OF M
gottheshot replied
Wahoo, thank Marie for letting me know.
The ‘luck’ (combination of aiming on his eyes and the direction of the sun on a very shaded area of forest) brought me to this picture. It was a right place, right time moment. When I get ‘special pcitures’ I am full of emotion and happiness and this was one of those moments. Thank you very much to all who voted for it.
Sheila Laurens
Congratulations for being placed in the top ten in the M challenge in Alphabet Soup. Sheila ~ co-host
gottheshot replied
Thank Sheila,
After ‘chasing’ the best photo with these beautiful creatures for a couple of hours on a very sunny day in Southern Japan – I found this young one with his mum and just lying down flat with a ‘thoughtful face on’.This photo still astounds – even me – with its clarity. Its only a 10MP but the detail was never repeated to this level in all my pics of monkeys – pretty close but never as clear as this one. Regards, Paul
Teresa Zieba
Fantastic capture. Love it!!!
gottheshot replied
Very kind Teresa, thank you.
I just couldnt believe the clarity that I had achieved with a 10MP camera. Taken from about 2 feet away and kneeling down in front of him. Thankfully he wasnt looking my way and so I captured his ‘thoughtful look’. Regards, Paul
Peter Denness
Great portrait and beautiful eyes. Nice composition too
gottheshot replied
Hi Peter, Can I have a time machine and I will go back to Japan and photograph them all over agan ? Thank you for taking the time to write such a nice comment.
Scott d'Almeida
brilliant
gottheshot replied
Hi Scott,
Thank you very much.
Photographically this was one of the best days of my life with this shot, my Three’s A Crowd shot and several others.

The title says it all. It makes me wonder what thoughts are going through its mind at that very moment …. superb shot, your patience was genuinely rewarded !!!
gottheshot replied
Hi Richie
2 days of following these little guys around. A huge percentage turned out as ‘snapshot fodder’ but then a TOP 20 of the best photos of my life emerged.Super strong sunlight plus trees causing the biggest shadows you’ve ever seen – then suddenly the guys were lit perfectly as they sat in different places out of the shade – hurray !! If you saw my ‘worse’ shots you could see why I deserved my rewards :o) Thank you for your very kind words – very much appreciated.

really GREAT shot!!
gottheshot replied 26 days ago
Hi Inge
Thank you very much indeed – best days of photography of my life – two days with these little guys – no fences, no bars, no cages – they were free to roam anywhere they want and this one was with his mum.
inge 26 days ago
yeah some days you just don’t forget, well great shot
gottheshot replied 25 days ago
I certainly will never forget those two days or any of the 90 days I spent in Japan. Each day is in a diary. 10,000 photos in 90 days.
As you have found (looking at your portfolio) – people photos are the most emotional and the most rewarding.
inge 25 days ago
thats true but also the most difficult i think! thanks and good luck
