Historic Rt. 66 Blue Swallow Motel by

Built in 1939, the Blue Swallow is located in Tucumcari, New Mexico. It is a 12-unit L-shaped motel listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

I have always been fascinated with historic Rt. 66 images and finally got to see and photograph this beautiful little motel on a recent trip through the southwest. It reminds me of many such structures I saw growing up in the south in the 1950s and 60s. The Blue Swallow was named by Smithsonian Magazine as “the last, best and friendliest of the old-time motels”

what a find for you then Gordon…nice capture of this historic place..

  • Thanks, Linda. Many of these old Rt. 66 landmarks have fallen into disrepair or are gone but this one has survived. It’s on a portion of the old Rt. 66 that remains intact even though a major Interstate highway runs nearby, so travelers can still get to it pretty easily. Thanks for your comment and support:)
