Capture of two Australian Pied Cormorants sitting on break water rocks at the marina of Nelson Bay.

These cormorants looked a bit like Bonnie and Clyde with one looking out for the other. Not just two birds.

he Australian Pied Cormorant ( /ˌpaɪd ˈkɔrmərənt/ pyd kor-mər-ənt), Phalacrocorax varius, also known as the Pied Cormorant or Pied Shag, is a medium-sized member of the cormorant family. It is found around the coasts of Australasia. In New Zealand it is usually known either as the Pied Shag or by its Māori name of Karuhiruhi. Older sources may refer to it as the “Yellow-faced Cormorant”.

  • Many thanks Dave. I noticed from one of your images that your cormorants are predominantly black with orange beaks. Always interesting to see variations of the same species. :-)))
