Windsor Castle is one of the three principal official residences of the British monarch. The castle has been continually transfromed since William the Conqueror built the first wooden castle between 1070 and 1086 AD, each monarch making changes to suit their needs and the current political climate (whether the country was at piece or war).
In 1992 a large part of the castle was damaged by fire, the restoration programme was not complete until 1997, mostly funded by the decision to open to the public for the first time the state rooms of Buckingham Palace. It has proved to be a popular tourist attraction bring in visitors from the world over.
