Basking Or Bored????
Two of the orangutan on exhibit at Auckland Zoo. They have got a relatively nice enclosure there with lots of equipment and things to keep these guys amused, but I’m still trying to work out if these two are basking in the morning sun or are bored silly. Mind you shortly after this the wee little baby of the group came along and tried to stir things up a bit….
Thanks for looking and I would appreciate any tips or advice as to what I may have done differently to improve this capture (still learning)

Love it! The do look a little bored…they look like kids do when they are sitting on a curb during summer thinking about what to do next! LOL Great capture Andrew!
Andrew S replied
Thanks Megan, living in the country that is a sight I haven’t seen for years but now that you mention it …..........

Charles Dobbs ...
Bored I guarantee you! Wouldn’t you be if you were in a cage all day?
Andrew S replied
Must admit that was my thought too Charles, but you sort of hope that they may just be relaxing in the morning rays (makes you feel better if you can convince yourself I guess).
Thanks for stopping by, appreciate the comment…..

you have shot their expressions well Andrew. They may be basking… I’m no ape expert, but the orangutan on the right is losing his fur – he may have been mishandled before the zoo, but orangutans in the wild have beautiful long orange fur when they are healthy. I think Auckland zoo is relatively careful though.

Thanks for dropping in Kelly, even thogh zoos do the best they can it always makes you wonder….Appreciate the visit.

Well I just got back from the mirror and I have to say they 100% Board
I don’t know what you could have done to improve this shot, without them moving around it may have been impossible to find a great vantage for framing them perhaps I would have tried a few more techniques with them being so immobile Such as the Orton effect perhaps I would have attempted (If a tripod was present) the zooming effect zooming out from close up but really this is great the way it is I may have gotten into some trouble myself as for being Mistook for an escapee LOL I don’t know if it would have been appropriate to attract their attention without being a disturbance but the their eye contact would have been really cool but really what more could you have done. I would have organized an Liberation attempt come storming out of some bushes wearing nothing but war paint and swinging from a vine LOL okay maybe I would have had to wear some type of jungle speedo or something LOL

Now there’s some ideas to play with, thanks for that mate. As for breaking them out I don’t think I could handle the hug if it worked, LOL…

GREAT capture along with your GREAT title for this shot Andrew…......definitely a bit of both don’t you think! LOL!!
Andrew S replied
Got to admit that it was early on a winters morn and they had just been let out into their enclosure. But when their zoo life is so predictable it must get boring for such intelligent (so we are told) creatures….Thanks Rose…...

Wonderful creatures. My little mate Daniel Clarke is trying to raise money to save these guys. He is only 12 and in a wheelchair. I am adding anew picture of him soon but I do have one already in my stuff of him. A great kid.
Andrew S replied
It’s good to see that Daniel is trying to help look out for these wonderful creatures, It must be great for him that you have befriended him (and no doubt probably helps to keep you centered at times too). Thanks for the support Steven, really appreciate it…
