Engine No. 934, Zig Zag Railway

The Zig Zag Railway in Lithgow, NSW, uses a number of different steam engines to haul passengers up and down the mointainside. This C17 class engine has been with them since 1975. It was originally built in 1949 by the Clyde Engineering Company, in Sydney. I took this shot while holidaying west of the Blue Mountains recently, after taking a ride on this fine old engine.

Note that I have another shot of this engine, here

Love the post production on the engine, gives it just a touch of the ghost train effect. Hogwarts anyone??

Thanks guys. Boadicea is the second person I’ve encountered to mention Harry Potter when looking at this image. I guess I better see those films then!

This is wonderfully atmospheric Clayton – I dont know whether it is low light, or whether you have dropped the saturation, but it looks a real workmanlike loco. I like the other shot too, but prefer this for the angle and the fact I can see the tender. Nice job.

Thanks Graeme. The light in the original scene was rather flat, but careful HDR processing has helped bring out the details without overdoing it with colour. I also chose not to brighten the image up too much. You should see it full size. It’s alive with detail.
