Advice needed

Am about to jet off on another 6 week + stint overseas and want to purchase a new Canon macro from Duty Free.

Am tossing up between a 60mm and a 100mm.

If any of you own either one of these lenses could you please post a shot in this journal with the lens details so that I can do a comparison.
Bit of free advertising for yourself in the process !!!

Any help would be more than appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Hugsss

    Hey,

I’ve got a Canon 100mm 1:2.8. Gets in pretty close but can also be good for wider shots, throwing the background out. Green Feather

    Hope this helps!

I’d personally go for the 100 being that i’ve tried it but couldn’t afford it and therefore got the Sigma instead. never tried the 60 but heard from owners they wish they had the 100

  • Globalphotos replied

Ahhh thanks so much, the 100mm may be he one then :-))

I think you know that I own the 100mm. They would both give detailed macro shots. The 100 will give you more working room .(You dont have to be as close to your subject). I think the 60 can only be used on a cropped sensor .I’m sure your close to getting the full frame 5d mkll.
One advantage I could see with the 60 is less weight and size for travel. I would get the 100mm.

  • Globalphotos replied

Weight is an issue with me all the time, but performance wins out every time. Looks like I’ll be getting the 100mm, thanks Steve !!

I am sure a camera shop would let you snap a few with each to do your own comparisons of the same shot so you can be absolutely sure of the differences. Cheers, Al
ps. take me with you on this holiday please…

They would, but I love to see nature pics with them. You need another vacation already??? LOL

I’d always pick the 100mm over the 60…..mainly because it’ll transfer over to a full frame if you ever get to that stage….and it’s got a great reputation for beautiful bokeh.

  • Globalphotos replied

Ahhhh ok, well looks like the 100mm wins, thanks for your input Mel, appreciated :-))

Hi, thanks so very much and for the kind comment :-)) Beautiful array of shots, looks like the 100mm is the one to buy !!

Jen Cannella uses lots of lenses and I’m sure 100mm is one of them…

    and
    Lorraine Creagh

plus I know for sure Eyestrange (journals about what she uses here and here) uses a 100mm and 65mm plus various other odds n sodds.

Enjoy choosing!! I’d love to have a 100mm but haven’t got an SLR so no point getting one… I’d also love a telescope to attach to a camera. One the size of The Hubble would be nice!!! But I have to save a little bit more. I hope I’ve helped… But somehow I think you’ve already decided!!!!

  • georgiegirl

    georgiegirl

    I’ve just noticed… Eyestrange doesn’t use the 100mm at all… its a 65mm!!

  • CaseySmith

    CaseySmith

Varina I have used both and the 100mm is a much easier lens to use as for the 65mm it’s a dedicated macro and is wonderfully close, but you have to work hard to get a sweet shot as the focus is hard, but also worth the effort. So in my oppinion I would get the 100mm as you can use it for other things than just macro where as the 65mm, its macro and nothing else. I hope this helps you.
