Pukeko

The Pukeko, or New Zealand Swamp Hen is a member of the rail family, and is similar to other species found all over the world. It is one of the few New Zealand native birds to have flourished since the arrival of man, and can be found in almost any grassland area, especially in swampy locations. Groups will often be seen foraging for food in road-side areas.

I have come to the conclusion that Pukeko are suicidal. I so often see them on the side of the road, dithering, darting backwards and forwards, looking for an opportunity to cross, only to come back later to see them squashed on the road. They seem to have no road sense at all.

Pukeko belongs to the following groups:

Birds and Creatures of Flight, New Zealand Made, The Birds and Vibrant and Vivid Color Available for sale as

    How to cook a Pukeko.

    You’ll need….

    1 Pukeko
    1 Rock
    5ltr Water

Place all ingredients in a pot and boil, when the rock is soft, remove from the pot. Throw the water rest of the ingredients away and enjoy your rock :)

Really nice picture of the old swamp hen

great shot. i havent seen them in water either. they can learn to live by the road, maybe it takes a few generations but the ones around here seem to hang on the verge between swamp and road. I dont see too many squashed. . . and you can eat them, um, if you have teeth of course. theyr’e tough as boots. . .um, best to scrape them off the road first of course. . .

  • Globalphotos replied

    LOL ….. thanks :)

pukeko looking in the mirror, great shot. Aren’t they cool birds? My cousins had a baby orphan that they reared and it used to slide all over the slippery floor until it learnt to walk. Really cute.

  • Globalphotos replied

Cool, they sure are, the babies have the most enormous feet :) Funny to watch
