Fairy Penguins
The Penguin Parade is located on Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia, only 140 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. It is part of Phillip Island Nature Park. The area is a reserve designed to protect and promote awareness of Little Penguins (previously called Fairy Penguins).
The first night I was on Phillip Island I went to the Penguin Parade. Each night at sunset, the world’s smallest penguins, the Little Penguins, emerge from the sea and waddle ashore to their sand dune burrows with bellies full of the days catch. I was amazed at how far they travel from their burrows.
The elevated boardwalks and viewing stands allow you to enjoy all the ‘penguin action’ without disturbing them or their burrow homes.
I stayed on the platform and watched them for two hours, getting soaked in rain storms and freezing winds…........was worth it !!! And yes it was Summer LOL
BTW you are not permitted to take any photographic equipment into the boardwalk/ platform area.
This shot however was taken at The Nobbies area on the side of a cliff. The penguins are a bluish colour and are so adorable, was hard to leave.

Very cute indeed…. and yet at the same time .. so dignified. Well captured. We have a colony on Granite Island off Victor Harbour. It is magic to watch them come ashore and march so purposefully off to their burrows.
Globalphotos replied
Thank you, yes I love Granite Island, spent a lot of my childhood down there, my grandparents kept a holiday house at VH overlooking the ocean, we used to watch the whales from the window.

They are gorgeous aren’t they Varinia ! Welcome to south of the divide in Vic ! 10 days later its mid 40’s ! 2 weeks prior it snowed on the ranges….
Would you believe the ignorant government is jeopordising these guys (one of Victoria’s largest tourist attraction) and so much more by proposing to build the world’s biggest desalination plant (aka POLLUTION FACTORY) between this location and a marine NP on a pristine coast…right in the area where they feed… !

all the best,

Globalphotos replied
Tone, you can campaign all you like, am in total agreement with you and yes it’s criminal what the vic govt is proposing, just like ours allowing the degradation and over supply of river systems . Human greed once again pops up it’s ugly head.
Yes the weather was freezing that weekend, as opposed to what we are having now, 44 C tomorrow, I am watching my garden die day after day, plants are being burnt to death…....... sad.

These little guys were the true highlight (among many) of our trip to Australia. We weren’t allowed to use our flashes so I respected that and only took photos of the display inside. It was so humorous to see them waddle a few feet, stop to catch their breath, and carry on another few feet. They looked so cute and cuddly you just wanted to take them home. Of course we had to buy a stuffed one as a remembrance! Thanks for this shot.
