The fascinating geothermal wonderland, Rotorua, New Zealand :))

The milky colour of the water of Sulphur Bay is caused by particles of sulphur being suspended in the water. This sulphur has been produced by hydrogen sulphide gas rising from the lake.
The smells of Sulphur Bay and Lake Rotorua are from sulphurous gases belched from the depths of the Earth and resemble rotten eggs !!
Steam and gases can be heard bubbling and roaring to the surface through vents and pools :))

    excellent reflective and serene shot ~ I had missed this til now ~ the beauty and stillness & milkiness is spot on ~ and I remember from visiting the sulphur spots around Old Faithful the smell of the rotten eggs! much better to view from a distance lol xx

    Gorgeous result! I really struggled in Rotorua….the smell knocked me, and I think it turned me into a cranky tourist….couldn’t find a scenic I liked! You’ve done a great job here!

    Great capture, Varinia. I used to work in the geothermal industry and I had seen lots of scenes like this one. The only thing was during that time I didn’t have the skills to take photos like you have now. Do you have some more photos of the thermal areas in New Zealand. They really are a wonder to behold.
