My inspiration for this shoot came from spending an evening at a bar called The Big Easy. Only slightly like the real New Orleans, I was recalling the allure of The Big Easy had for me in my twenties through the filter of my romanticizing of the adventures I would no doubt have. After a summer of sweating and waiting tables, New Orleans lost any luster for me and I went home. But my evening at The Big Easy had me thinking of young women at the turn of the century with the same romantic ideas I had while the reality usually led to prostitution and destitution. And I imagined one young woman writing letters home to her mother painting a fiercely different picture as to not shame the family—though the writing on the wall is clear—a dire mistake had been made.
portrait, woman, black corset, profile, red, allure, the big easy, new orleans, letters, broken dreams, disenchantment
