Cougar doing a kitty-sleep

This photo is taken at the Olmense Zoo (Olmen, Belgium).
Don’t you just love their cute look (claws and teeth not included) (:

A quick bio on these beautifull creatures:

class: Mammalia (mammals)
order: Carnivora (carnivores)
family: felidae (felines)
genus: puma

They go under the names Puma, Panther, Mountain Lion, American Lion and Cougar etc…. The cougar holds the Guinness record for the animal with the highest number of names, presumably due to its wide distribution across North and South America. It has over 40 names in English alone!!!

Being the largest of the small cats, they are slender and agile cats.
And although they resemble the domestic cat, they are about the same size as an adult human, with a maximum of about 3 metres!!

An adult paw print is approximately 10 cm… that’s 4 inches!

The gray wolf and the cougar compete more directly for prey, especially during the winter. While individually more powerful than the gray wolf, a solitary cougar may be dominated by the pack structure of the wolves.
Wolves can steal killings of the cougar and occasionally kill the cougar as well.

Cougars (as well as other cat-likes) deserve respect and admiration from all humans! They may look like domestic cats, but are none the less wild animals living on survival instincts only!

they sure look cute, but I don’t want to upset him, ‘cause one punch with his paw and I’d be KO in a second..

Thank you for the info on the Cougar, it’s very interesting.

I love this photo, the cougar’s pose is just so “cat” – taking in the sun whereever it’s available. Stretched out on the roof like that makes him seem quite “domestic”. Beautiful lighting, lovely shot.

  • Glitter replied

    thanks so much Clarkey!! :)
I really adore their cat-like behaviour! they are such strong creatures and yet they seem so domestic with this kind of behaviour :)

I had one of these stocking me in the wild once. Now every time I go into the mountains alone, I think about it. Think I need counseling? Ü

    Randy

  • Glitter replied

counseling? why would you need that? being alone in nature can help you reset your thoughts and get your focus to the right things… so that’s good… but I do however have my doubts about the cougar following you… if he is determined on following you and eating you… that he would have done it immediately.. there’s no doubt about that… so I think you were very lucky that he/she wasn’t hungry at that time…
    thanks for you comment!

  • Randall Spencer

    Randall Spencer

He was coming directly at me, when my eyes met his he crouched down, layed his ears back, and started moving his shoulders up and down, pawing the dirt. I had seen my own house cats do this before they pounce. I had a high powered rifle with me at the time that was sighted in for 150 yards. I probably shot right over the top of him, he was so close. He bolted up and over a cliff so fast, I just stood there shaking. Knowing that if he choose to come at me instead, I wouldn’t have had time to reload.

There were sheep in the area, and I think he thought that’s what I was. But when he crouched down and prep ed himself, it looked like I was on his list.

  • Glitter replied

well, sounds like you really were a very very lucky person!
and if he indeed was thinking of coming back at you… well then I probably would not have been speaking to you right now in RB!
I do however am very glad you didn’t kill him with your rifle…although it would have been a clear case of self-defense… I still would feel very sad that a glorious creature like this had to die..

  • Randall Spencer

    Randall Spencer

Now that it has been years and I am safe at home talking to you in RB. I have to agree with you, and say that I am glad that I missed him. He was a very beautiful animal. Very powerful. I was awe struck at being able to be so close to him.

Thanks for hearing me on this. Have a good one and keep up the good work.
