Corner of a foreign field - for Harry Patch
Taken in the week the last surviving of the great war died;
If I should die, think only this of me:
That there’s some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England’s, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blessed by the suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts a peace, under an English heaven.
Very kindly nominated by Donald Cameron for the pay it forward group. He had to say this about the image;
“ I nominate Corner of a foreign field – for Harry Patch by GlennC . An outstanding image in terms of composition and technique, taken to another level with the use of an 8 minute exposure and subtle tones in the black and white conversion. However what really makes this image unique is that it forms a tribute to the passing of the last World War I veteran Harry Patch, accompanied by fittingly poignant text. In my opinion probably the most powerful image on Redbubble.”

Stunning and evocative photograph. Beautiful tribute to a noble and courageous man.
GlennC replied
Thomas, thanks you, it was my small tribute to a man and generation. I can’t possibly do justice to what they have given us all.

Great image and tribute, surprisingly fitting capture actually. I was just listening to Radiohead’s “tribute to Harry Patch”http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_8184000/8184802.stm , quite a moving song using his words:
I am the only one that got through
The others died where ever they fell
It was an ambush
They came up from all sides
Give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves
I’ve seen devils coming up from the ground
I’ve seen hell upon this earth
The next will be chemical but they will never learn

Sorry forgot the : before the link – tribute to Harry Patch
GlennC replied
Donald, I was really moved by the passing of Harry, I have no connection to the man or his family, but his noble nature seemed to strike a cord, especially with the current fighting our armed forces are engaged in. One can only imagine the horrors he had seen in his lifetime, that hopefully we or our children will never see.
It really is fitting of a band of Radioheads status to record a tribute and i have to say how beautiful it is!

What a stunning photo, and a great tribute. And Donald’s linked song was a true ‘shivers down the spine’ moment.
