A lone young bison taking refuge from the cold at this thermal feature in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Bison can take some pretty extreme cold, typically down to -30F. But they’re smart, too, as they seek out the thermal areas of the park to warm up. And they know they can’t drink the water.

Clever Bison … makes sense why there are so many there now!! Great find, hope you kept warm too.

  • Thanks for the comment Barbara. They were great to watch around the thermal areas. And yes, I kept warm :)

Wonderful capture of the harsh winter environment that the Bisons and other wild animals have to endure in Yellowstone National Park. Poor young Bison appears to be less than the ideal weight for the winter season and I am sure he is taking in all the thermal heat he can get.

  • Hi Sandy. That’s exactly what I wanted to show here. Glad you see it.

    Wonderful capture!!
Just watched a TV special of the Bison of Yellowstone, I was amazed that they will go to these thermal spots even though they are toxic to them!! In the brutal Winter’s of Yellowstone, it is often their only recourse for life!!

  • Hi Ruth, I’ve seen that same show. Pretty amazing. Sort of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t. it was amazing to see their struggle in winter.

Yes!! It is the lesser of two evils I guess! It was an amazing show—I love these documentations of the animals and their life struggles! Love those NatG-O programs!!!
