SQUISH (a.k.a. - an ode to British Petroleum) by

Mixed media – gouache, acrylic & ink on paper.

With the tragedy of the BP oil catastrophe leaching oil into our environment and no solution seeming to be on the horizon, I can’t help but think of how time is running out for the wildlife, the delicate coastal regions and for the well being of the environment in general.

In this artwork, the background has the hint of a wetland at the bottom, blackened like the real world coast is becoming with oil. I made it almost unrecognizeable as a watery coast, as is happening in real life.

One hand is holding a watch that is reading 11:05 – time running out. It’s knotted together with a second hand which is squishing the earth. There’s a little puff of smoke (shaped like an atomic mushroom cloud) coming out.

Does this make my feelings on the entire matter clear???

Great vision – too bad this is the reality of things

  • Yep, I’d rather be doing a painting on something else, but I had to let out my frustrations with the BP situation in some constructive way. BTW, great “pearl keeper” series, girl!

Your’e V. Welcome; I’ve been reading about the oil spill & your artwork really says alot about it w/the time “bomb” theme you used. We live in some scary times & we have to take responsibility to the environment now. Thanks for sending this.!
