After the year 1028, Greek monk Simeon lived as a hermit in the ruins of the Porta Nigra. After his death, he was sanctified.

This is a statue of his likeness on the side of a building in Trier, Germany.

(The Porta Nigra (Latin for black gate) is a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany.)
