Mermaid
In a sea of sharks
You thought they were always looking at me
So you were protective
Then you thought I was looking at them
So you became possessive
You believed there was a part of me I hid
That longed to be free
But truly, I didn’t
You didn’t know I hated being doused in
Salt water
It never charmed me
I had tasted it so many times before
I knew better
You’d always say
You’re so beautiful
How could you want only me?
And then you’d stare off
Making some untrue comment
Leaving me in the dark
With sharks
Circling me
Intoxicated by my lonely scent
I’m sure you’ve heard
I found the love of my life
In a stream

Sometimes the sharks really are circling, Amy, more perhaps because they sensed his insecurity than any uncertainty on your part. But I’m glad you found your love in a gentle stream where there are no sharks for either of you to be concerned with. Beautiful poem, superb phrasing, lovely rhythm – most of all great and gentle heart.
