I have never gotten the chance to tell you
That when I take your hand to tell you something
I want you to press it to your face
And turn to kiss my palm
Telling me, all along
You have loved me
I have never gotten the chance to let you know
That when I run up to you in a silly mood
And you tackle me like a cat
I want you to lie on top of me
So I can feel your heaviness, against my chest
And then for you to confess
That you’ve longed for me too
For how can there be a chance
In traffic
In the middle of a movie
There is no chance, resting at the beach
Or imagining underneath our regal tree
Some would say
There is your chance, take it
But something always gets in the way
Something I can’t explain
And as we are taking a walk
I see a bench in plain view
I envision myself saying
Let’s sit
And then unsealing the tiny envelope in my heart
Reading the words with such relief
But the bench came and went
As I see the veins of the leaves on the ground
Crawling out
And spelling my regret
There goes another chance
That I never seem to get

Ahhh Amy how poignant this is! How touching and just a little sad – so many missed opportunities, Your phrasing and imagery are so perfectly matched to the mood of this piece. A simply wonderful poem!
