As some of you know, Lilac was having some problems after delivering puppies. Things seemed to be going ok until a couple of days ago, when things took a turn for the worst.

Lilac is one of my American Pit Bull Terriers. She has always been a good girl….loves all people and children and other dogs too. Just a sweet sweet girl.

I had tried to breed her to my male Buster….but they never “locked up” like usual….so I assumed that she was not pregnant. A few weeks after that I noticed some lumps in her mammory glands. She went to the vet, and they were removed. Her first day home after that, she proceeded to take the staples out. So back to the Vet to get her stitched back up again. This time she came home with an elizabethan collar on so she couldn’t get to them. I think she must have know something I didn’t know.

Well, I was sure she wasn’t pregnant, but after a while she was getting milk…and so I thought she was having a false pregnancy. A few days later….to my surprize….she started to have puppies. I was shocked. Unfortunately 2 were born lifeless and despite all efforts to try to get them to breathe….they never did. One was born with a split between the front toes…..most likely due to the anesthesia….according to the Vets. And then there were the 2 live and totally healthy girls, who I call Wonder and Dream. 2 days after the birth, the little male with the split toe got tangled up in the blanket and didn’t make it. So the girls remained.

Lilac had sooooo much milk and on one side (the surgery side) she was started to get adema (extra fluid under the skin)….and then the milk wasn’t getting through right and she was getting mastitis. So to the vet we went again. She was put on all sorts of medications and I was told that I should not let the puppies nurse due to infection. So I bottle fed the 2 little ones.

Things seemed to be going good. The adema went down and the mastitus was going away. Then a couple of days ago, I noticed blood. Also the glands were getting bigger again and the adema was coming back. By the time I took her in today 6-11-10 there was much more blood coming from her …and even from her teeth. The Vet could hardly find a vein and she had almost no blood pressure.
She was still wagging her tail and giving kisses. But she wasn’t going to get better…so I had to let her go. I told her she was going to the Rainbow Bridge…and there she would be all better and she would fly in the sky and be happy. I thanked her for her two beautiful “miracle” puppies (who she got to have a cuddle with before she went to the Vet) and told her I would take good care of them.

I know it was the right thing to do, but it really hurts as I’m sure all of you who love your animals know. So Rest In Peace my beautiful girl. I will see you again one day.
