Artist's Description

I was riding home from a store a few towns away from me when I saw a Sundog out in the sky. So many things got in the way of it that I wasn’t able to get a good shot of it. When I pulled into my last store’s parking lot and looked out for it, I was farther away from it than in the beginning and I noticed that it was a Double Sundog. I wasn’t sure I could get it all in one shot…but I got it! And here it is!

Dedicated to the wonders of the Earth

The scientific name for a Sundog is parhelion, plural parchelia – for beside the sun. It is an atmospheric optical phenomenon primarily associated with the reflection or refraction of sunlight by small ice crystals making up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. When sunlight passes through the sides of a flat crystal, both the angle of the sunrays and the orientation of the crystals affects the shape and color of the Sundogs.
