Eland Mom and Baby
A Mother Eland nurses her young one at the Virginia Safari Park in Natural Bridge, Virginia. The Safari Park has 180 acres where many different species of animals roam free. It’s a wonderful place. This was taken with my Kodak Easyshare DX 3900 digital camera with 3.1 megapixels.
BEST VIEWED LARGE
Eland (Taurotragus oryx)
The Eland is the largest antelope in the world, weighing from 1000 to 2100 pounds and standing from 4 1/2 feet to 6 feet at the shoulder. It’s native range is Africa. It’s diet consists of leaves and grasses, and some fruit. Over the past 100 years, game hunting and loss of habitat has caused it’s numbers to dwindle, especially in Southern Africa. It is now found primarily in National Parks. The Eland looks much like an Ox. Both the males and the females have spiking horns that twist straight back from the face. The Oryx is the only antelope born with horns. At birth, the horns are visible as hair covered bumps.

Nice shot with that point and shoot. You would have thought it was with a DSLR. I have past the signs for this park on the way to DC and now think I need to visit.
