Of course, I would! Going over to Grandma’s house just next door after arriving home from school, was much more fun than lingering at my house. Mum always had work for me to do! Well for a child anything and most things at home seemed like work.
Nana’s house and especially her enormous garden was a treasure trove of everything that could be grown to eat, snails were one thing my baby sister used to try, I was a bit fussier! A ‘piece” consisted of a huge thick slab of home baked bread smothered with dripping from left over fat from roast dinners and then liberally sprinkled with white sugar, best of all though was the abundance of fruit trees, berry bushes, berry patches ,vegetables and in season the wonderful sweet corn patch I could hide in least Mum got wind or where I was. The corn, or maize as Nana used to call it was used for feeding the animals not sure which ones actually, I can only remember a house cow and lots of chooks, several ducks many bantams always a poddy calf which I adored feeding with its large hungry tongue slurping at the bucket of milk .Ah fresh corn though, silky fronds of green and gold foliage peeled back to reveal succulent ears of juicy golden pieces of crunchy delight. It wasn’t’t our habit those days to cook corn that was discovered later in the in the next decade, maybe some knew about it but in the days I am remembering ,corn was considered food for the four footed residents.

Great story and wonderful image to go with it. Love the smile on Nana, you can tell she is proud to be with her grandchildren. I had a grandma like that so I understand what a precious memory this can bring.

thanks Byron ,Enivea pushed me into this! I was the only grandkid she got on with later , not sure why? I used to do a lot for her [living next door of course it was easy ] as she was crippled from rheumatics from age 30 ,terrible pain always , in this pic she must have been only around 63 or so. times have changed, she looks so much older. My paternal grnadmother was the best too, so ooo lucky
