Outside Dunny

I was looking at
JimCaldwells" photo in his files of an outhouse [toilet ]we Aussies mentioned we [impolitely ]called them Dunnies

OUTSIDE DUNNY

I have to go

Defiantly have to

Outside in the black

Down the ramp that runs from the back door from the house.

The light shines to the end of the ramp, after that, blackness

I can make out the white narrow concrete path

Past the shed, running now, past the doorway with the dark opening, maybe in there? Then the wood pile, maybe it’s lurking there, maybe in the shed

Maybe in the dunny, it’s dark

I know it’s clean, no spiders are allowed to live here

She sees to that, cleanliness is most important

Not the eyes of a frightened child.

My Uncle was an Opal Miner in Coober Pedy for 20 years. Legend has it that after the second time he was bitten on the balls by a red back, in temper he poured petrol down the hole and blew it to pieces. There was **** everywhere LOL.

Love the subject of dunnies. It is so aussie.

  • ooh that’s so funny, well not for him but ….

lol…remember them well…was scared witless using ours which was full of spiders…big black things in webs in each corner…never hung around in there too long…lol.

  • oh I used to be terrified of the boogie man lurking in the wood pile more! I had a friend who had the same problem, just as she was about to open the door a hairpin dropped out of her hair onto her shoulder ….and she just didn’t make it! she was well inot her teens too so goodness knows what people must have told little kids way back.I know I was told they lived in the cupboards under the stairs. I guess to stop kids being nosey!

I still look at shut doors with suspicion.

No it IS funny Ginny. He went to the hospital twice from the red back bites as his balls swelled up. He had a firey spanish temper and didn’t quite think through the plan to blow up the dunny with him still in it lol

  • gee I am laughing so much ! I have heard they really do hurt!
