Wreck found: The crew of the HMAS Sydney (ABC TV)
The group searching for the HMAS Sydney has found the wreckage of the World War II Australian warship off the coast of Western Australia, the ABC has confirmed.

The Sydney was sunk with all hands in November 1941 after a battle with the German raider Kormoran.

The Sydney’s entire crew of 645 went down with the ship in the Indian Ocean and its location has been a mystery for 66 years.

The Finding Sydney Foundation yesterday revealed it had discovered the wreckage of Kormoran off the Western Australia coast, raising hopes that the Sydney would be relocated.

The Australian ship was last seen badly damaged and steaming over the horizon after the exchange of gunfire with the Kormoran, which also sank after the battle.

Sincere condolences Gini, to you and your family. Your Dad gave his life for us…and we are grateful to him and all the others aboard the Sydney whose lives ended after the gunfight. The war is long over and so we think of those German families too…whose loved ones were on the Kormoran.

  • thanks Estelle lovely comment war is so stupid. Friends, then enemies, then friends again, doesn’t make sense to me.

My sincere condolences, Ginny….as so many have said already…he was a handsome man and it’s very sad about his and so many other young men loosing their lives as they did. I was also sad to read that your mother died 5 years would have been good for her to know of the final resting place of the HMAS Sydney. I do hope this brings you some peace.
