This is outstanding and a bit sad.

  • Virginia McGowan replied

Thankyou Jim they did looked rather despondent but I think it’s THEIR afternoon spot in the sun so maybe they were happy….they probably felt sorry for me,having to battle the afternoon traffic.

This is such a wonderful image. It will probably make many sad to see it, and I agree, it is sad to look at. We can argue the fact that they are ever here in the first place – it would be wonderful if they weren’t, but they are here, and hence need looking after. Once a chinp has been removed from the wild [or been born into captivity] – they can never be released again – they simply wouldn’t survive.

These little guys are not as sad as it seems. The one in the background is grooming, and his pal, is just relaxing in the sun, watching over his friend. They have probably had their fill of running around and climbing for the day and are just taking some well earned rest.

My dream is to see one day a world without zoos, sanctuaries and rescue centres, but alas, that is a long way off and I will probably never see it, but while there are zoos etc, – they need as much support as they can get to Look after their residents.

This image is very powerful and not only shows the sad facts about captive life, but also how kind and gentle chimpanzees can be, how well they are able to adapt to an alien environment and just how like us they are.

They look totally dejected ginny, but I suppose we have to think of the others who are not as “fortunate” as these two, and are being kept as pets, photographers “lures” in holiday places, or kept in cages so small they can hardly turn around.

I like to watch Monkey World, on television, which is a large sanctuary in the County of Dorset, UK ,where they save neglected, abused and orphan babies of all species of primates from all over the world, some of their stories are heart rending

  • Virginia McGowan replied

thanks Pat so sad all the cruel things people do.

Excellent capture Ginny, did make me feel a little sad at first, then I read Julie’s comment, which made me feel a tad better. The zoo’s of the world are changing and creating more natural habitats for the animals of the earth.

  • Virginia McGowan replied

Thanks Kathy for your comment .The enclosure is great and they only had just ambled over to this spot and sat down while I was watching.I bet that is their own ‘spot’ .
Julie is wonderful with her insight.

this is an amazing capture. (well done!)
I keep thinking it could almost be teenagers sitting outside of their highschool class, or workers popped out of the office for smoko…..
(But yes, there is also that element of sadness, knowing their situation….)

  • Virginia McGowan replied

thanks for comment Wendy, love it.

A very sad picture ! The person who designed that brickwork instead of letting them sleep in trees or on the ground seems a bit off the mark ! A well captured shot with great clarity and detail.

Well Taronga is improving so much all the time.so they might get around to putting something there but they were loving the warmth of the sunshine from the wall though. I have been wondering how the new elephant enclosure is .It wasn’t quite finished when I was there.
