Outside Dunny

Virginia McGowan

Outside Dunny

I was looking at
JimCaldwells
photo in his files of an outhouse [toilet ]we Aussies mentioned we [impolitely ]called them Dunnies I just did a watercolour sketch to go with the words..

OUTSIDE DUNNY

I have to go

Defiantly have to

Outside in the black

Down the ramp that runs from the back door from the house.

The light shines to the end of the ramp, after that, blackness

I can make out the white narrow concrete path

Past the shed, running now, past the doorway with the dark opening, maybe in there?

Then the wood pile, maybe it’s lurking there, maybe in the shed

Maybe in the dunny, it’s dark

I know it’s clean, no spiders are allowed to live here

She sees to that, cleanliness is most important

Not the eyes of a frightened child.

  • Virginia McGowan replied

Hi Deb so many thankyou’s lovely of you to comment, well just have a go draw out a shape and colour it in use something in front of you eg a vase or bottle, put a light next to it to get the shape and shadows to make it sit down nicely on the table or whatever…….[don’t try imagination as it’s too hard and you’ll get discouraged ]well that’s the way I was shown first up and it is very simple , Use a soft pencil too …..

Wonderful work Ginny, brings back memories of my fathers camp in Vermont many years ago.

  • Virginia McGowan replied

Yes had one of them growing up in the territory..so many stories they could tell loveoly work

  • Virginia McGowan replied

Not long since Brisbane was sewered either. The septics here were all made from tee trees and tended to sink in after heavy rain…not much fun backyards with a big suspicious looking hollow.
