From Hancocks Lookout South Australia

This was painted from a sketch and photograph back home after returning while travelling on a healing journey from Qld to Alice Springs in 2002 Instead of going on a ‘proper;’holiday after a traumatic few years I decided I just had to see the Centre of our beautiful country …so …we just jumped into the car, 4×4 and slept in the back ,cooking with one frypan over a small gas fire rested on the tailboard ,most times I slept on the ground next to the car bcause i didn’t like being confined. Luckily no mozzies appeared.

  • Virginia McGowan replied

thanks Lyn, well it’s rather cheap…when we arrived at King’s Canyon Resort we asked if they had a room only one left at $300 a night and that was only one of the cheaper rooms, so we went to the camp [$20 ] but it was fabulous anyway.

Wow Ginny!! This is just so very beautiful!! You’ve so captured the beauty of these rolling hills!!Sometimes when taking a photo of hills like this, you just can’t do it justice!! A Definite Fav!!

  • Virginia McGowan replied

I wished I had a digital [before digital] or even a proper camera with a zoom , I took a few for a slide /transparency film too but I hadn’t used it before [it’ s a 1965 model] and I didn’t roll the film around I find a sketch and notes much better. Most of the notes for this though says freezing cold ,windy no just looked… I’ll type out what I wrote…Freezing cold at the top. Gale force winds blowing across very steep hills view over the Spencer Gulf for …H.ds kils
ooh must check, which ones are there,I have written green parrots.

Fabulous way to get away.. I remember Hancock’s Lookout because I used to live near Pt. Augusta, but all that sticks in my mind was one intrusive gum tree which seems to appear on all the postcards and even one of the SA numberplates – the one that says ‘SA -Gateway to the Outback’.
You have a wonderful mix of colours in the foreground and have captured those great rolling hills.

  • Virginia McGowan replied

thanks so much shallay. In my sketch I have a gum tree right in the foreground ,so there must be one, it is on the left of this. there were or still are? some magnifient gums up the track I took some photos and I did paint one,for fun [I could add a thumb nail here as it’s too small a pic file to upload on rb]

Oh wow – great gum – I like! There was some scenic country there – this would have been on a road off Horrock’s Pass, but Alligator Gorge – just out of Wilmington, was worth seeing too. It is special to be reminded me of that country again – thankyou.

  • Virginia McGowan replied

thanks Sahlley the gum was on the 7 mile track up to the lookout, I saaw so much to photo or draw but nowhere to stop on the main roads to and from P.A.rather narrow.

wow Ginny this takes the cake as the expression goes. I wouldn’t worry about mosquitoes if I were you, what about the redbelly blacks? The colours here are beautiful and the composition.

  • Virginia McGowan replied

um funny, when we were at Kings Canyon I got the wind up thinking a dingo might nibble my feet and was lying there sort of not sleeping, and I spotted what I thought was a striped snake near me it turned out it was my husbands rubber thongs which had a black stripe aroung them, I panicked a bit!
one thing strange, no matter where you stop to sleep, people in another car will come along and pull up just about right on top of you and settle down then another, and another and before you know your feel like the whole of aus is there. It happened so often . I think people must have felt safer with company.

  • GloriaDK

    GloriaDK

We have friends in the U.S. who don’t like the idea of living here due to the heat and the bugs. They think our snakes live in our yards, well , some of them do but we won’t tell them that only in drought. I have to pay bills and have a coffee with my husband before the petrol goes up again and we cut down down down…
