Addiction | The Utopia-Bread Mashup

Malevolent yearning
Always returning…so I’m learning
As midnight discerns and descends….and yet,
I attempt to reason with
Another season as it closes in
Somewhere lost to the ancient, to the abstract
Behind the echoes and the artifacts
Familiar monologue through the fog
Cloaked in the miasma
To my amazement…just when I thought it was safe
It pains me to say…
I would give anything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home

For just another night, in times polite, we were so right
Yet in the in-between, lost to you, lost to me
From a clearing in the haze…you called my name
Implicit currency exchanged
A trade arranged
Usual disclaim, let me rephrase, and we became…again
Name your price
A ticket to paradise
I can’t stay here anymore

Our moments always end like this
One more goodnight, another kiss
Insinuating residue…something borrowed, something cruel
Past the point of misconstrue
As I often do, when in truth…
Willing participant
Bestow and recant in symbolic dance
Who are we kidding?
I wish I was stronger, just a little longer
Until the opportunity has passed, but alas…
I’ve been from shore to shore to shore
If there’s a short cut I’d have found it
But there’s no easy way around it

In lithe retreat, indiscreet, across the street
The spill nearly complete
Until next time, I will try to abide
Each occasion open ended…transcended and extended
I’m only pretending to fool myself
I can quit at any time…like a good addict
My denial emphatic
Emblematic, at best
And yet…
With honest intent to not let regret
Abet shadows across the stunning cache
Of each day
But still you showed the way
And I knew from watching you
Nobody else could ever know
The part of me that can’t let go

Artist's Description

Inspired by “Love Is The Answer” by Utopia and “Everything I Own” by Bread. Humbly dedicated to the forever brilliant Todd Rundgren.

I have had both of these amazing songs stuck in my head for the past few days and I knew that I was feeling inspired by them, but I couldn’t bring each separate feeling of inspiration to fruition. It was only when I paired the lyrics that the rest of this poem wrote itself around them rather quickly. I may revisit this and edit, but for now…
