The Cracker House is the type of dwelling built by the early settlers of Floida in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s
The term “Cracker” refers to early cattlemen in Florida’s history. During Cattle drives the cattlemen would use the cracking sound of their whips to keep the cattle moving.
This model is a “single-pen” or one room design, which was the basic type of house built by pioneering homesteaders in southwest Florida
