Everybody knew it
No one said a word
One moment we were laughing
At a joke I’d never heard
The room fell silent
As I looked you in the eye
Take the cross off the high altar
Let all the roses die
Don’t question my devotionIt may be all I have to giveDon’t leave me in the openI’m not a beggar or a thiefI know I heard you callingYou’ve wanted me beforeIf you give me just one reasonI will turn around and leaveThat’s not the whole story
Well it scares me anyway
I don’t know what I need to hear
To make me stay
Say something funny
Or say that’s what they inferred
But if our love is charred
Take this
Scratch out the final words
Don’t question my devotionIt may be all I have to giveDon’t leave me in the openI’m not a beggar or a thiefI know I heard you callingYou’ve wanted me beforeIf you give me just one reasonI will turn around and leaveBridge:I’d go through all the motionsBut what’s that gonna proveI’d be sorry for the things I saidIf only you were tooI would offer you a clicheIf there were any left to giveMy love is like an oceanYour heart is just a sieveSo you question my devotionThat is all I have to giveYou leave me in the openWith the beggars and the thievesI may have heard you callingLike a million times beforeI need more than just one reasonAs I turn around and leave

I can hear this in a song. So well written, I can see a crowded room (in black & white) and two people stand out, one’s lips in color, the other’s eyes in color).
David – I’d love to hear the melody with these great lyrics and see what kind of edge you put them to.
Very cool!!
