London is the capital city of England and the UK. With a population of over 7 million, London is Europe’s largest and most densely populated city with 4,679 people per square km (Office of National Statistics 2002). The London region is made up of 32 London Boroughs and the Corporation of London. 17% of the UK’s unemployed people live in London.

The rate of homelessness in London is twice as high as the rest of England with over 50,000 homeless households. According to the Communities and Local Government estimates in June 2003 about half of the people sleeping rough in England were in London.

The main reasons for the high levels of homelessness in London are growth of the housing market and ongoing population increase in the capital. Although wages are generally higher in the capital, they are unable to keep up with rising house prices. The demand for housing is increasing and the supply of affordable housing is decreasing. The Mayor of London has introduced a London Plan which calls for half of new homes in London to be affordable, to help reduce the levels of homelessness in the capital.

    Thanks, Jenny! Guess you are close to my age, then;-)
    If enough people vote for it in the “It is London Calling” challenge, I may have many sales (the big prize there is 30 exemplars of the tee bought for a London store)... But I guess the competition will be quite tough.

    you are welcome! i think this one is ok for this challenge.

  • Gili Orr replied

    Got a bit confused;) You mean “Hee-hee London” (my homeless theme)? Or the other option, with the graffiti theme? Sorry to bother you again… I guess that emotionally, being a “world changer” too, you would prefer the homeless question raised, but I wonder what people may vote for… My tees are liked by my friends, but not so much by challenge voters, so far.
    PS. Thanks for the watchlist;

    Gili again you have captured my attention! You’re depiction of homelessness definitely hits close to home. I live in the States and am in Las Vegas. We definitely have a plethora of homeless. It’s hard though, some actually are “Professional Beggars” and have made so much money at it that they really live quite comfortably. So to decide on really who deserves your help and who doesn’t is tough. But I feel your piece. GREAT!!!!

  • Gili Orr replied

    Thanks again, Psyche! Yes, I guess it’s a complicated issue… Giving money to a beggar is not the best way of solving his problems, be they economical or psychological, but the real solutions require mindful intervention, in which Europe believes more than the US does, I think. Sounds like they are working on it in England, at least…
