Some of my best friends are... (Homos, Jews, Marsians, etc.)

When confronted with their bigotry, making unpleasantly sterotypical remarks on people from some “looked down on” group – or discriminating people on that basis – lots of people tend to answer with: You are wrong, some of my best friends are… (Jews, blacks, homos, whatever). Well, then I pity their best friends.

A few years ago we were actually discriminated against by some hotel manager in Spain on the basis of sexual orientation. He was really surprised to hear that he was discriminating (and not just following stupid, rigid rules). He used the above-written sentence, and we wondered if his friend(s) would have approved of his treatment of us…
