one thing i dont like about zoos… the animals are prisoners… id much prefer to do a safari…

    lottery here i come :)

  • Gili Orr replied

    I understand your point…

  • MFPhotography

    MFPhotography

didnt mean anything nasty… i go to zoos often ish the only way i can see animals… but it would be better if they were free

  • Gili Orr replied

Well, some are kept for their own preservation, as they are endangered… still, I prefer safaris too, or at least some of the less prison-like zoo we have in the Netherlands.

  • C J Hummel - Foxfire Gallery

    C J Hummel - ...

Amazing sadness in that face! It actually touches my heart. You captured this perfectly.

Whenever I visit a traditional zoo, i feel the sadness within these animals. Maybe they are protected from predators, but they are not happy.

  • Gili Orr replied

I feel that way too, mostly… freedom, space, privacy, doing your own thing at your own risk… is it worth giving up for free food and shelter? That was and maybe still is the question for many women around the world, when marrying (or not divorcing) for these same reasons… You may say women still have choice while these animals don’t, but it’s not always true (for women). OK, but I love watching animals, and I don’t think zoos will stop existing in the near future, partly because not just predators but also us, humans, make the natural environment unliveable for many animals. I just hope that more and more zoos would try to imitate natural environment for the enclosed animals, as much as possible.

  • C J Hummel - Foxfire Gallery

    C J Hummel - ...

I agree with you Gili. i msut say here in teh UK they have alrady adopted a differnt attitude witht he emrgence of so called Safary parks, where the animals have huge ground they can grase and exisit. In fact is the human who is encased in their vehicles adn the animals thar oam free. I like the concept.

We also have a few excellent Wildlife centres, trying to preserve english wildlife. Most of them have been bought to the centres very young or injured and haev been nurtured back to health. The enclosures are big and mimic their natural environment, Many are in natural forests and the animals look and behave very different to those in zoo’s

Sadly many Zoo’s still adopt what I believe to be a Victorian attitude towards animal husbandry. We could all help change their mind, by not supporting Zoo’s but nature reserves, they soon get the message.

  • Gili Orr replied

I guess you are right, but most people are not THAT political, and it is not effective unless at least 10-20 % less per year visit these zoos, andd probably even much more drastic reduction in profits is needed to get the message through, since the changes we wish for are probably quite costly… lots in this world is measured in money.

  • C J Hummel - Foxfire Gallery

    C J Hummel - ...

well that has been the reason why more safai parks have popped up in the uk. some zoos have expanded and animals have now more space to roam.

it does work, but more people need to be vote with their feet not just with their mouth.
