Ink drawing from December 1977 … AFTER a suicide attempt.
Originally drawn on a white paper… somehow got really brownish on my parents’ livingroom wall, I think the only drawing of mine which suffered this misfortune. Still, Some people on RB seem to like such effect ;-)

I HAVE BEEN FEELING A BIT DOWN LATELY! I FEEL THE EMOTION IN YOUR IMAGE. GREAT WORK!

  • Gili Orr replied

Thanks! I am sorry for that feeling… I had it too many times in my life :-(
This drawing is from very long ago, around 30 years ago, actually… AFTER a suicide attempt. But I thought I was OK at that time, till I looked at the date today (date is cropped, as well as my signature).

Perfect depiction….the fetal position is often taken by someone suffering from depression. Fantastic work Gili. xxx

  • Gili Orr replied

Thank you sooo much, Amarica! Hope you are not speaking from own experience… this pain is like the cancer of the soul, eating it up while on the surface all can seem OK… Glad I am not there at the moment.

Gili, this is an exceptional piece of art! Something good came out of depression after all….

  • Gili Orr replied

Toda mikerev lev, Lior! Yes, my pain and emotional problems have been the main source of my art ;-) I suspect that’s the case with some more artists…

Wonderful work with a sad expression at the same time!

  • Gili Orr replied

Well, sad is one of the strongest emotions, which touches you deep inside… me, at least.
I mean, there is no contradiction, lots of art is sad, isn’t it?

Congrats on being featured in the Woman Appreciation group.
    Well deserved!
I can understand the feeling but have found it less in evidence since joining RB.
Wish I was younger and could do the Artshealth course my local uni is now offering.
I think the patina shows us that we are lucky that you are able to show us the work after all this time.
    Bravo!

  • Gili Orr replied

Well, I am glad you feel lucky about that ;) I had times in my life I regretted not succeeding in getting it all over with when “I had the chance” (enough of the right pills, I mean). I also had other times, in which I looked in amazement at all that I had learned, all that I had managed to do, all the new things in my life I could not have imagined happening when I all saw was my black hole of hopelessness… What I tend to remind myself these days, when the dark clouds gather over my head is “There is always tomorrow”. While tomorrow is no guarantee for something better happening, it is a possibility… and besides, even if nothing better happens, mostly my attitude towards the less good things does improve at times;)

Hi Gili, I just want to say congratulations on being featured in Solo!! Your work is so awesome. I see that you are having your reception. I can’t stay….but would love to look at all of your wonderful work. This piece is just lovely with the shadow feeling like something that looms above. The turned in foot really helps to express that feeling of tucking your self inside in hiding. It’s such a sad thing that depression is becoming so common….beautiful work!!

  • Gili Orr replied 11 days ago

Thanks so much, Elizabeth, for your deep comment and congratulations! You are invited to go visit my reception again anytime, if you feel like it. I will check out for visits and comments there once in a while.

    Oh, yes.
Wrenching. And too familiar in its power. MARVELOUS portrait of depression…....
    ::applause::

  • Gili Orr replied 11 days ago

Thanks, Robin! Sorry about it being familiar, but life has its ups and downs, doesn’t it?

  • robpixaday

    robpixaday 11 days ago

O!! I hope my comment didn’t sound like the image was familiar..not at all…it’s the feeling, the depression thing…..spent way too long over the years dealing with it not to recognize it when I see it.
    Your image is brilliant!

And wow, yes…life’s always shifting around, up down and sideways…lol

  • Gili Orr replied 11 days ago

Oh, I meant just that – that I am sorry you had to deal with depression, too… but many of us do… and art helps;-)

Fantastic depiction of this illness! How the body curls upon itself, into a fetal position, trying to take up the tiniest space, dominated by its dark self, trying desperately to understand the world outside and make sense of how one is feeling and reacting or not! Wonderful drawing with so much hidden depth and meaning. Each time I look at it, I see more…

  • Gili Orr replied 10 days ago

Thanks so much, Joanne! I do appreciate your reflections on my drawing…
I just somehow am not so comfortable with the word “illness”... but OK, what do labels matter? For doctors it means that it may be solved by medicines or locking the person somewhere, so she won’t harm herself. For others it means that the “mentally ill” person is very different from themselves… are all the depressed people in the world mentally ill? Is it simply chemicals in the brain that should be fixed? There are so many people who are depressed nowadays, that you may think something must be actually ill or wrong in the world we are living in, making it too hard to cope emotionally…

  • Gili Orr replied 10 days ago

Hope it doesn’t sound like an attack in anyway…. I was just sharing my problem with this label, because labels like this are not too good for self-image or integrating in the world.
