In honour of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin celebrated on the 15th of August. In Antwerp it is Mother’s Day. This is a box I received for my solemn communion representing part of a painting by an Italian Master.
A superb photo and homage to the incredibly beautiful gift that you received for your communion!!! Bravo Gilberte!!!
Thanks a lot Ken. I kept it preciously. When I was a kid all objects we received for our communion were with a religious subject….times have changed a bit since…
This , my friend, is the head of the Virgin from the well-known painting by the Italian High Renaissance painter, Raffaello Santi. The painting is entitled ‘The Madonna of the Goldfinch’ and it depicts Our Lady seated on a rock with an opened book in her left hand, while with her right hand she is seemingly holding the young St. John the Baptist from his back, who holding a Goldfinch (symbolizing the Crucifiction) in both hands is in the act of offering it to the young Jesus who, standing at his mother’s lap, is in turn caressing the bird with his right hand. This painting (on a wooden panel) was shatered into 17 pieces when the house of its owner collapsed in 1547, just 41 years after its creation. It has now been fully restored and is on show at the Uffizi gallery in my beloved Florence. Beautiful presentation of this token of one of the most beautiful days of your life my friend.
A huge thank you Tony for your elaborate comment. Knowing the title I could search on google and find the representation of the painting.Very cleverly restored.
