Upper photo: my grand parents
Lower: several years later on pilgrimage to Lourdes in France
.People at the back of the car are my grand parents.People in front of them are my granddad’s brother and his wife.
At the grotto of Lourdes all the sick and disabled are in the front row to be blessed by the priest reviewing them all. My granddad was standing behind them with all the tourists. In front of him was a crippled man. When the priest was in front of him and blessed him with the monstrance, the man stood up and could walk.He shouted; “I can walk, I can walk” My granddad was so impressed that he made the vow to pay a trip to Lourdes to each of his children (5) Some years later it was my parents turn to go and I may accompany them.
Very impressive – thousands of people from all over the world. They sang “Ave Maria” all together each in his own language but the refrain being “Ave, ave Maria” they all sang the same….unforgettable!.

What a very nice photo and beautiful memory, you must have had a wonderful childhood Gilberte

  • Thanks bunches Hans.I think I had a normal childhood with a very severe father (which was also normal at that time).but when I came home at the end of the school year with all my prices he had tears in his eyes.Mother made a special dinner for me and had bought the last fashion handbag.I was so happy, I hadn’t asked anything but mother knew what a girl of 16 would like. When I was 17 the war started for 5 years with curfew at 5 o’cl, food rationed, queuewing for everything, painting the windows blue for the planes, bombs alerts, sirenes all the time.Geheime Feldpolizei searching the house.when I was 18 I had to go to the Kommandatur to be questioned by Frau Kotzek to see if she could send me to Germany to work there.
As I had a little sister of 2 and my mother ill I was allowed to stay in Belgium.
