Another man's castle...
This is a woodcut of informal settlers settling in for the night in winter in Durban South Africa early post-apartheid.
Their home would typically be made from “found” materials, plywood and corrigated iron sheets being popular.
Mostly these homes are very small, often housing more than one family, and not very weather-proof.
Often land is informally settled and “Squatter Camps” spring up. The government has a RDP program, where people can register for government built houses. The South African Government is the only government (to my knowledge) which has the right to housing in its Constitution. However, with high unemployment levels, a huge influx of refugees and illegal immigrants, the housing program has incredibly long wait-lists.
This image also illustrates the truly important things in life… Not HD Plasma screen tv’s and big SUV’s, but a roof over your head, food in your tummy, a warm blanket on a cold night, and being surrounded by those that you love…
Everything else is gravy.
