Matilda was born and lived on the remote Island of North Rona. Her mother died in childbirth. Her father was a poor and humble man, and he worked hard to support his beautiful daughter.
But one night he had a dream about a nectarine tree which grew in Greenland. He became obsessed with the idea of farming these trees on his island, and was sure that in this way his fortune would be made.
One morning Matilda woke to find her father gone – on the kitchen table was a note which told her what she had feared….he had gone to Greenland to seek the fruit tree of fortune from his dreams.
She was but 14 years old, living three hours by foot from the nearest coastal village. It is said that she spent every waking hour playing the piano, hoping that her father would return…..but he was never seen again. She died, presumably of starvation, on a date unknown. It is said that she plays the piano still, in the remote cottage, on this remote Isle.
