I live and work in Boise, ID, where my photography studio is my favorite of the four businesses I own and operate.
I so love that every day I see proof of the lesson that if you just look, you can see beautiful things all around. Everywhere – no matter where you’re at – if you just choose to.
My father recently passed away, and was the first true source of this lesson. He was the ultimate personal optimist. After being diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes at a very young age, and being left a paraplegic in a logging accident when I was a child, he woke up every morning being truly glad for his life. He always said the accident was the best thing that ever happened to him… he was the sole provider for a family of four young children at the time. Even after the diabetes led to severe heart failure in the last few years of his life, he chose to be excited about his “new ride” when he could no longer walk to his workshop by himself and had to get a motorized wheelchair.
From that very personal life lesson I now choose to spend my days seeing the beauty and good in life, rather than focus on the negative. It’s not always easy – just watch the news – but it’s strong medicine to make a concious choice to turn off the news and look around for something pretty.... and so worth the effort.
