This HDR Stuff is Amazing!

I thought I would show this example of a photo as a before and after image that has been through a HDR application. It is the same photo in both cases…. This was taken with my Canon A95 Compact set on full automatic. I downloaded straight onto my PC and left it as it was with no post processing at all. I didn’t even give the image a second look as there didn’t seem to be any detail there at all! However tonight I put this plain dull image throught the HDR application I bought recently and the results are as shown! No other PS work has been done to it. I have also notice that not all images may be suitable for HDR, some can turn out poorer than the original so it can be difficult to determine just by looking at the original on how the end result will come out. It is almost like waiting to get your prints back after putting your film roll in for developing!! :-)

The program is called Photomatix Pro 2.5.4 and the cost was around AUD$115.00.

Ok…I can see the difference…and the second does look much better… but you had your camera on fully automatic originally… not the best setting I’d argue.

The problem I see with hdr – esp re: seascapes, is that they can look a bit ‘sameish’
(run for cover as the hail of bullets whizz through the air !)

    As I take mainly candids/street … I haven’t used it .

I suppose my ‘Dappled Shadow’ might be a candidate…
    What would be the benefit??

Hi Caroline I had a look at your amazing image ‘Drappled Shadow’ and what you have done with it almost makes look already as an HDR….... so I would see no real benefit using HDR on it, however I would love to see your excellent perspective under the pier put through the process to see what it would result in….. cheers Gerry

it is a awesome treatment to a shot, but ive already seen some go overboard on the saturation, i like it because it enhances the contrast of things, definitely a huge difference

Stumbled on a HDR RedBubble group only a few days ago. Lots of interesting possibilities. As it turns out I also joined the Melbourne Camera Club just yesterday (an Australian mob) and mentioned HDR to one of the guys there. He pointed out it’s a digital take on an old black and white printing technique.
